The West Coast is a wild and rugged place, and we love it! With over 14 years of experience building on the Coast, we have weathered storms and scorching days, gaining a deep understanding of what works best in our volatile conditions. As a local company, we are well-versed in the challenges of the West Coast and equipped with the expertise to build homes that thrive here. Our team of eight skilled builders brings over 70 years of combined experience, ensuring top-quality workmanship on every project.
Founded by Hokitika licensed building practitioner Hayden Simpson in 2002 as H W Simpson Builders Ltd, the company evolved into Simpson Residential Ltd to reflect our growing vision. While we undertake various projects, our passion remains residential new builds and renovations and now Portable homes. Based in Hokitika, we proudly serve Westland and the surrounding districts.
Building on our strong foundation, we are now also building industry-leading portable homes with SIMPortables. These luxury units are designed to provide high-quality, sustainable housing solutions, ensuring comfort and durability in even the harshest environments. Meet Hayden
“I grew up in the small South Westland town of Hari Hari and completed a pre-trade course at Tai Poutini Polytechnic, where I discovered my passion for building. I was fortunate to secure an apprenticeship with a local construction company, gaining essential trade skills and strong work ethics.
After five years in Nelson, I became a qualified carpenter, refining my skills in residential construction, project management, and quality workmanship. During this time, my wife and I built our first home, sparking the idea of starting my own business. On returning to the West Coast, I established H W Simpson Builders Ltd, later evolving into Simpson Residential Ltd to reflect the company’s growth.
A stint in the UK and Europe broadened my building knowledge, and on returning to New Zealand in 2008, I applied new techniques and insights to my business. I take pride in delivering top-quality workmanship and ensuring my team stays ahead of industry standards.
I have now leveraged my skills and experience to create SIMPortable, offering luxury portable homes to provide high-quality, sustainable housing solutions. I’m excited about the company’s future and look forward to this journey.
